Supernatural

If you haven't heard of Supernatural, you've obviously been living under rock. EVERYONE is obsessed with it. But, since I'm nice, here's the real quick run down: Basically these two brothers travel the country to fight various monsters and demons. That's all there is to it. It involves all things 'supernatual-esque'. So, what does this overly popular show have to do with Roman culutre? Well, to fight these monsters, especially demons, an exorcism has to be spoken. And that exorcism is in--that's right Mr. Mural--Latin. So, how accurate is their speaking and conjugation of this exorcism? and what does it translate to? Well, like it or not, you're going to find out.

Here's a video of the exorcism they use in the show. In this instance, the brothers try to exorcise multiple demons at once by playing a recording of one of the brothers reciting it. To the left, is a written translation of what is actually said.

EXORCISM:

Exorcizamus te, omnis immundus spiritus

omnis satanica potestas, omnis incursio
infernalis adversarii, omnis legio,
omnis congregatio et secta diabolica.
Ergo draco maledicte
et omnis legio diabolica adjuramus te.
cessa decipere humanas creaturas,
eisque aeternae Perditionis venenum propinare.
Vade, Satana, inventor et magister
omnis fallaciae, hostis humanae salutis.
Humiliare sub potenti manu dei,
contremisce et effuge, invocato a
nobis sancto et terribili nomine,
quem inferi tremunt.
Ab insidiis diaboli, libera nos, Domine.
Exorcizamus te, omnis immundus spiritus
omnis satanica potestas, omnis incursio
infernalis adversarii,omnis legio,
omnis congregatio et secta diabolica.
Ergo draco maledicte
et omnis legio diabolica
adjuramus te.
Cessa decipere humanas creaturas,
eisque aeternae Perditionis venenum propinare.
Ut Ecclesiam tuam secura tibi facias libertate servire
te rogamus, audi nos.

TRANSLATION:

We exorcise you, every impure spirit,

every satanic power, every incursion
of the infernal adversary, every legion,
every congregation and diabolical sect.
Thus, cursed demon
and every diabolical legion, we adjure you.
Cease to deceive human creatures,
and to give to them the Poison of Eternal Perdition.
Go away, Satan, inventor and master
of all deceit, enemy of humanity's salvation.
Be humble under the Powerful Hand of God --
tremble and flee -- I invoke by
us the Sacred and Terrible Name
at which those down below tremble.
From the snares of the devil, free us, Lord.
We exorcise you, every impure spirit,
every satanic power, every incursion
of the infernal adversary every legion
every congregation and diabolical sect.
Thus cursed demon
and every diabolical legion
we adjure you.
So that you may make your Church safe to serve you freely,
we ask you, hear us.

Analysis:

From My Latin I eyes, the translation looks pretty accurate. Unfortuantely, there is no proper source that can confirm that. So, I will just explain what I see. It is seen in the first line that they conjugate the verb 'Exorcizare' (to exorcize) in the present tense which is done correctly. There are a lot of uses of the accusative case and the genitive is used in the phrase 'manu dei' which translate to Hand of the god. There are a few of uses of the imperative, which makes sense, since they are ordering a demon to leave a body. The phrase 'Vade, Satana' is a good example of this. They are addressing one peron, Satan, and the verb is 'Videre, meaning to go', therefore  the '-re' is dropped and it becomes imperative.

The Pronunciation seems to be fine to me, as well. all of the letters are announced in a word and the C's are all pronounced like K's. The V's are pronounced, which is unlike the latin that we are learning in class. But, according to the Ecclesiastical Latin pronunciation, which would most likely be the pronuciation that would be used in the show (the show also involves God, angels, and other religious figures), the V's are pronounced. Therefore making the prounuciation right.

Might there be mistakes in it, there could be. But, from what I have learned so far, everything seems to be conjugated correctly. (If you have extra time on your hand, you could tell me if everything is correct or if they messed up, Mr. Mural, but you don't have to. I understand that you are a very busy person).

Accuracy Rating: 8/10

(Cannot confirm that all of the Exorcism is Gramatically correct)
